In the week that Apple revealed iOS7 with a host of new features we’ve been looking at the competition for the all conquering tablet that is the iPad.
We’re all aware of the marketing lure of Apple, with it’s über cool looks and sleek design but if we take a step back and try and judge it on it’s functionality and performance – then is the iPad worth all the accolades it receives?
If we were writing this 12 months ago – then probably yes. The iPad was the best tablet out there. But just as we talked in our recent blog about how Samsung are challenging Apple in the “innovation stakes” market – so are Sony in the tablet market.
In fact they’ve now gone head to head with the iPad following the launch of the new Xperia Tablet Z.
Sony are pitching it as the ultimate entertainment tablet and it’s easy to see why.
The picture quality on this 10 inch tablet uses the same technology that Sony use in their Bravia TVs – the HD Reality Display has a 1920 x 1200 resolution giving what Sony claim to be “the widest colour spectrum on the market”.
So it’s brilliant for scrolling through photos and for watching movies.
The Xperia Tablet is powered by the Snapdragon S4 pro quad processor – so it’s as quick as fox but the battery drains at a snails pace. Making it ultra portable for long journeys. It’s also the lightest and thinnest 10 inch tablet on the market, so your bag isn’t weighed down with the extra kit and you won’t be needing a bigger bag to cram it into either – it really does take up next to no space at all.
The tablet also integrates superbly with other Sony products through the use of NFC. That means that you can stream music from your Xperia to any NFC enabled wireless speaker and with Sony’s Miracast technology you can transfer what’s on the screen of the Xperia straight onto your Bravia TV.
The feature that is probably the most marketable though is its life proofing. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is both dust proof and waterproof. Basically you could drop this Xperia into the bath, leave it for 30 minutes and it would still be fine.
That is indeed a snazzy feature for bath lovers – but the real things that put the Xperia on a par with iPad (and in many cases beyond it) are the actual performance, connectivity and functionality that you will use and enjoy on a daily basis.
The Sony Xperia Z Tablet. Better than the iPad? Probably.
