What is Black Friday?

General News

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday… the retail sector has gone crazy in the past few years with special ‘deal days’. But what exactly is Black Friday? Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in America, held every year on the fourth Thursday of November. In recent years, retailers entice shoppers into their stores by offering incredible discounts and promotions in store and in the last few years it has hopped over the pond to the UK stores as well. It’s impossible to be 100% certain where the coined ‘Black Friday’ name came from, but we’re pretty sure it’s here to stay. Here are a few theories below:

  1. The name originated from Philadelphia in the US, and referred to all the traffic and congestion caused by the volume of people off work on the day after their national Thanksgiving holiday. Usually in America, people not working in the retail or public service sectors get the Friday after Thanksgiving off work, leading to more people out and about contributing to more traffic jams.
  2. Smog built up on this day from all the vehicles on the roads in cities and towns, leading to a black fog in the air.
  3. Retailers have put a positive spin on the day, by saying that it’s the first day of the year where the turn from running at a financial loss (in the red) to black.

Whatever the source of ‘Black Friday’ all we know is that at Gerald Giles of Norwich we have some crazy ‘Mega Deals’ in-store and online.
